Metal Masterpieces: NOOM's Bespoke Creations for the Ukrainian Pavilion at the London Design Biennale 2023

In the realm of design, where creativity meets craftsmanship, NOOM has showcased its exceptional metalworking skills with two remarkable creations for the Ukrainian Pavilion at the esteemed London Design Biennale 2023. Combining intricate techniques and meticulous attention to detail, NOOM has produced a stunning set of brass letters for the exhibition's logo and a series of captivating metal objects named "Dnipro," designed by Serhii Hotvianskiy. Let's dive into the extraordinary craftsmanship and artistry behind these bespoke works.

The Darkest Hour is Just Before Dawn: Brass Logo Letters

For the exhibition's logo, NOOM has beautifully crafted each letter using the timeless elegance of brass. The metal letters were meticulously cut with a laser, ensuring precision and accuracy. After the initial cutting process, NOOM employed a series of techniques to bring out the full potential of the brass material. The ends of each letter were carefully processed, providing a refined finish. To achieve a velvety effect and create a distinct separation between the lines, NOOM designed and developed a specialized machine for hatching, resulting in a stunning texture and visual appeal.

Metal Objects “Dnipro”

In collaboration with designer Serhii Hotvianskiy, NOOM brings forth the "Dnipro" series, a collection of metal objects that embodies the essence of strength and beauty. These remarkable creations were forged from solid fragments of steel, originating from Ukraine, each weighted over 35 kg before processing. Through meticulous craftsmanship and innovative techniques, NOOM transformed these hefty fragments into elegant pieces, weighing 20 to 25 kg.

NOOM's artisans dedicated substantial time and expertise to shape each Dnipro object, ensuring that every contour and form was impeccably realized. The process involved utilizing three-coordinate machines, allowing for the manipulation of metal with utmost precision and plasticity. The resulting pieces exude a sense of fluidity and grace, showcasing the mastery of NOOM's craftsmen.

Our artisans spent approximately 20 to 32 hours continuously working on each piece. Utilizing three different types of machines with three-coordinate processing capabilities, they masterfully sculpted the metal, shaping it with an impressive fluidity that exudes artistic expression.

Like the brass letters, the Dnipro objects underwent a comprehensive finishing treatment. After the intricate shaping process, the metal surfaces were finely polished using a range of abrasives with different grain fractions. A final polishing with oil was then applied, providing both a captivating sheen and an enduring defense against corrosion, solidifying their timeless appeal.
